Helena Bonham Carter is een Brits actrice, die vooral bekend geworden is door haar rollen in kostuumdrama's.
Bonham Carter maakte in 1985 haar debuut in de titelrol van de film Lady Jane. Daarna kreeg ze de hoofdrol in d Merchant & Ivory-film 'A Room With a View'. Deze film won acht Oscars, waaronder die voor Beste Regie en Beste Film. Het grote succes van de film deed Bonham Carter besluiten te stoppen met haar studie in Cambridge.
Bonham Carter werd aanvankelijk meer en meer getypecast, waardoor ze leek te blijven steken in kostuumdrama's (bijvoorbeeld 'Howard's End' uit 1992). Vanaf 1995 veranderde dit. Woody Allen gaf haar de rol van zijn vrouw in 'Mighty Aphrodite'. Voor haar rol in Iain Softleys 'The Wings of the Dove' kreeg ze een Oscarnominatie. In 1999 kreeg ze een rol in de veelbesproken film 'Fight Club'.
In 2001 was Bonham Carter als de chimpansee Ari te zien in Tim Burtons remake van 'Planet of the Apes'. Ook speelde ze in de daaropvolgende films van Burton, met wie ze inmiddels een relatie had gekregen. Ze had kleine rollen in 'Big Fish' en 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' en was ook te horen in Burtons animatiefilm 'Corpse Bride', samen met een andere vaste acteur van Burton, Johnny Depp. In 2007 speelde ze de slechte Bellatrix van Detta in de vijfde Harry Potterfilm ('Harry Potter en de Orde van de Feniks').
Bonham Carter had een relatie met Kenneth Branagh. In 2001 verloofde ze zich met Tim Burton, met wie ze een zoon en een dochter heeft.
Actrice Helena Bonham Carter ('Big Fish', 'Sweeney Todd') is in diepe rouw nadat ze vier naaste familieleden verloor in een auto-ongeval. Het 14-jarige neefje, de tante, oom en schoonzus van de actrice waren op safari in Zuid-Afrika toen hun busje over de kop sloeg na een klapband. Ze waren alle vier op slag dood.
